2020 Junior Development Championship Dates Announced
BC Athletics is very pleased to announce the following host clubs for the 2020 Junior Development (JD) Championship events:
JD Pentathlon Championship – Okanagan Athletics, Kelowna (June 27, 2020)
JD Track & Field Championship – Ocean Athletics, South Surrey (August 1-2, 2020)
JD Cross Country Championship* – Prairie Inn Harriers, Victoria (October 24, 2020)
Okanagan Athletics and Ocean Athletics are both experienced host organizations, having most recently hosted Junior Development Championships in 2018 and 2019, respectively. “The Pentathlon and Track & Field Championships are always fun-filled weekends that see young athletes put forth their best efforts on the track and in the field. We are thrilled to once again award these championships to these host organizations,” says Chris Winter, Technical Manager of Track & Field at BC Athletics. “We are particularly excited about the new format of the Pentathlon, as 2020 will see it embedded within the existing Jack Brow Memorial competition, adding to the already great atmosphere at one of BC’s longest standing Track & Field Meets.”
Regarding their successful bid, Maureen de St. Croix, Head Coach & Meet Director of Ocean Athletics said, “We are pleased to be hosting the 2020 JD Track & Field Championships. We look forward to welcoming the athletes and families from around the province to the City of Surrey.” Similarly, Karen Hatch, Manager of Okanagan Athletics said, “We are excited about the opportunity and are looking forward to hosting another great event.”
The JD Pentathlon Championships will take place at Kelowna’s Apple Bowl Stadium while the JD Track & Field Championships will be held at South Surrey Athletic Park. More information about these championships will be posted to the BC Athletics Calendar as they become available at: http://www.bcathletics.org/CalendarResults/.
BC Athletics’ Junior Development Committee made the hosting recommendations, which were ratified at the JD Annual General Meeting held in Richmond on October 27, 2019.
*The JD Cross Country Championships will occur as part of the larger BC Athletics Cross Country Championships.
About the BC Athletics Junior Development Program:
The Junior Development (JD) Program gives children the opportunitiy to develop physical literacy skills in a club environment. This program creates a space where children ages 9 to 13 can compete in alignment with the Long Term Athlete Development pathway - a model that promotes longevity in sport. The goal is to learn and build upon Track & Field specific skills to develop speed and fitness, and most importantly, to have fun!
