Dudince, Slovakia – On Saturday, March 22, 2025, Evan Dunfee established a new world record in the 35km race walk at the Dudince 50, a World Athletics Race Walking Tour Gold meet. He completed the event in 2:21:40, surpassing the previous record held by Japan's Masatora Kawano by seven seconds. Dunfee led the field for the entire race. This result follows his recent North American 20km record.
Evan is an Olympic bronze medalist from the Tokyo 2020 Games in the 50km race walk, and a world championship bronze medalist. The 50km event, his specialty, was eliminated from the 2024 Olympics. In an outstanding show of ability to pivot, versatility, and resilience, Dunfee reinvented his athletic self, focused on the 20km race, and placed 5th in Paris, despite suffering a gastrointestinal virus the same week.
Beyond competition, Dunfee is an ambassador for KidSport, specifically KidSport BC. He participates in fundraising activities and advocates for the organization's mission to provide sports opportunities for children.
Evan also coaches with the University of British Columbia (UBC) Thunderbirds track and field program, specializing in race walking. He also dedicates time to coaching race walk at lower mainland schools, promoting the sport to younger generations. UBC is the only Canadian university offering race walking as a varsity sport. Race walk often requires some advocacy by coaches for their athletes as it is an often ignored or diminished event area.
Dunfee's world record elevates his already distinguished athletics career, showcasing his exceptional talent on the international stage. His dedication, however, is not confined to global competitions and we are incredibly proud to have him as part of our BC Athletics community.
