Township of Langley to host 2022 and 2023 World Track & Field Trials
Athletics Canada announced today that the Township of Langley, B.C., will host the 2022 and 2023 editions of the Canadian Track and Field Championships.
In both 2022 and 2023, the Canadian Track and Field Championships will include national championships for Senior, U20, Para Athletics and Combined Events, serving as Trials for the World Athletics Championships to be held in Portland, Oregon (July 15 – 24, 2022) and Budapest, Hungary (August 19 – 27, 2023) respectively.
The Township of Langley had been awarded the 2021 and 2022 editions of the event in July of 2017. However, with the postponement of the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games, as well as Athletics Canada’s Olympic and Paralympic Trials presented by Bell to 2021, Langley will now host the 2022 and 2023 events.
“I’d like to thank everyone involved in making this decision. It certainly was not an easy situation, but the support and understanding from BC Athletics, the Township of Langley and the Local Organizing Committee went a long way in getting us to this point. We’re thrilled that the Township of Langley will now be hosting not one, but two World Championship Trials. We look forward to hosting two very successful events in 2022 and 2023,” said David Bedford, Athletics Canada Chief Executive Officer.
“The Township of Langley is thrilled to be hosting the Canadian Track and Field Championships and World Championship Trials with the Langley Mustangs Track and Field Club,” said Mayor Jack Froese. “Not only will this be a unique opportunity to see elite athletes try out for a chance to compete on the world stage, the second year of trials corresponds with the Township’s 150th anniversary. Sports have played an important role throughout our community’s history, and this will be another wonderful way to celebrate our milestone in 2023.”
“The last time the Canadian Track and Field Championships were held in British-Columbia was in Victoria in 2004. On behalf of the entire Local Organizing Committee I can confidently say we are thrilled to welcome the Canadian Championships and World Trials to the west coast,” said Brent Dolfo, Local Organizing Committee Chair.
